Radiant Floor Heating
The benefits of radiant heat have been known for centuries-the Romans used it to heat their homes and baths. Today we know that best way of warming a room is to heat the floor rather than to try to make the heat travel sideways from a fireplace, radiator or air register.
Living in a radiant heated home provides you with a level of comfort that no other heating method can match. If you asked someone who lives in a radiant heated home what they like about it, they will tell you “it just feels right”. That’s because, like the sun on your face, or the warm sand under your feet on a tropical beach, living with radiant heat is one of life’s simple pleasures. By turning the floor of your home into a source of heat, you and your family will feel its warmth and comfort directly.
Radiant Heat is:
- Healthier, no hot air blowing around so your home is cleaner, healthier environment and everyone in it will breathe easier.
- Invisible Comfort, no unsightly registers, baseboards or wall radiators, there’s nothing to see and no cold breezes.
- Quieter, no fan or furnace combustion noises.
- Lower heating costs, with radiant heat you are more comfortable at a lower thermostat setting saving you money.
- Individual room control, radiant systems are easily zoned so each room can have a different comfort level.

Boilers and Hydronic
Just like gas furnace high efficiency boilers are gaining momentum. If your home has or is going to have radiant floor heating then they maybe the right choice for you.
New high efficiency condensing boiler can be 15% to 20% more efficient than a 20 year old cast iron boiler so replacing that old unit with a new high efficiency one can save you money on your heating costs. The question you should ask is will a high efficiency boiler work with my homes heating system.
The answer is probably yes if you have radiant floor heating and maybe if you have another form of hydronic heating such as hydronic baseboard or radiators. High efficiency boilers require low return water temperatures to archive their best efficiency making them an ideal choice for radiant floor heating. However if you have hydronic baseboard or radiators the return water temperature from this type of system will rarely be low enough for the condensing design of the high efficiency boiler to absorb any heat from it. In this case you may be better off with a new standard efficiency boiler.
For smaller homes it may be possible to use a high efficiency tank model water heater or tankless water heater to provide both potable water heating and space heating using a heat exchanger. Using just one system to both heat your potable water and your home can save your family money.
If you are unsure of what type of boiler to install in your home, our trained professionals can recommend high quality products and can help find the prefect unit to heat your home or business.
A new boiler replacement is an investment in your home. It will increase the value of your home as well as reduce your monthly operating expenses, making your home more attractive and affordable to buyers. Financing your investment has never been easier. With a low monthly plan, a new boiler is affordable to any home owner. With the money saved per month on your heating bills and utility company incentives, the new boiler will pay for itself in a short period of time.
If your boiler hasn’t been cleaned in a few years, than it is probably a good idea to have a seasonal service. Also your boiler is only part of the system, the pumps, controls and other components all need to be in proper work order for the system to work at peak efficiency.
If you already have a boiler system installed in your home it is important to maintain it regularly. Sunworks also provides Puget Sound residents with boiler system maintenance services. Providing your boiler system with proper up keep can help you avoid future system malfunctions.

Heat Pumps - Geothermal
Geothermal heating and cooling is in step with the times and with the future. “Green” technologies, which works with the environment instead of against it continue to gain momentum amid concerns over the skyrocketing cost of fossil fuels and energy conservation. Geothermal heat pump can supply forced air heating and cooling with a central ducted supply system or hot or cool water for a radiant heating and cooling system.
A geothermal heat pump uses an abundant source of free, renewable energy to heat your home in the winter and cool it in the summer and it located right under your home. The secret to a geothermal heat pump’s amazing efficiency is that, although it operates similarly to a standard heat pump, it exchanges heat with the ground instead of the outdoor air. The temperature of the outdoor air can vary greatly from day to night and more than 80 degrees from the coldest winter night to the hottest summer day. In contrast, the temperature just a few feet below the earth’s surface stays an average of 55 degrees year-round in the Pacific Northwest.
In the winter a geothermal heat pump can produce over five dollars of heat for each dollar spent on electricity to operate it. During the summer a geothermal heat pump can be twice as efficient as the best air source system.
Geothermal systems offer:
- Low operating costs
- Enhanced Comfort
- Reliability
- Are Environmentally Friendly

It also dehumidifies the indoor air for a cleaner air supply. The most common application is an air-to-air heat pump with a central forced air duct system using room registers to circulate heated and cooled air around your home. We also have mini-splits systems that work without central duct systems. Referred to as ductless mini-split systems, they use smaller outdoor units and the indoor unit sits unobtrusively on the wall to control air flow. These high-wall, under-ceiling and cassette systems are mounted in or near the ceiling. This insures that they seamlessly blend in with any rooms’ décor while providing quiet temperature controlled comfort. Gas Furnaces
A forced air furnace is the most commonly used residential heating system used in the US, running most often on natural gas, but sometimes on propane gas, electricity or oil and deliver there heat through a duct system.
Electric furnaces are the least expensive furnaces to install but can cost more to operate. One advance of electric furnaces is that they can be used with heat pumps, which will make them much cheaper to operate. Most new homes being built in the Northwest will come with a gas furnace. Gas furnaces come with a host of choices which can affect their price.
First is heat output, measured in British Thermal Units(Btu’s); an average new 2500 square foot home maybe will serviced by a 45,000 Btu’s unit where an older home may need 60,000 Btu’s. A heat loss and gain analyses will provide the correct sizing information.
Next consider efficiency. Older model gas and propane furnaces were often rated at plus or minus 80% and were non-condensing with 20% of the heat output going up the vent. New condensing models can have ratings as high as 97 percent. These high-efficiency condensing furnaces use plastic vent pipe and only loose a small amount of their heat output out the vent.
Last, it’s also important to determine how effectively a gas furnace can heat your home, in a large part this can be determined by “staging” and blower options. Odds are that, if your old furnace is more than 15 years old it is a single stage and single speed unit. Meaning it always runs at full combustion power or output and has only one heating speed for the blower. New furnaces can have 2 stage or modulating gas valves and variable speed blowers. We have new single and 2 stage furnaces from 80% to 96% efficiency. Two stage furnaces are capable of running at 60 to 65precent when first starting up to conserve fuel, and then ramping up to full output as needed. Some models are available with variable speed blowers. Our super high 97% efficient furnace has a modulating gas valve and variable speed blower which can run anywhere from 33 to 100 percent power in 1 percent increments. A new furnace with staging gas valve and variable speed blower will help increase comfort in your home and lower your energy bill.
We have been installing new gas furnaces for many years and we know that choosing a new gas furnace for your home is not easy. There are many factors involved that can impact installation requirements and price. Water Heating
New water heaters are far more efficient then ones that are 10 years old and tankless water heaters are a common replacement for many home owner. At Sunworks we have been installing high efficiency water heaters for over 15 years and believe that there are many options when it comes time to replace yours that you should look at. Your options will depend on location, size, both number of gallons and where it is located, number of people in your home and how much hot neater you use and need.
It is also a good idea to research the different options available before making your decision. Many people ask us about tankless water heaters as a replacement for their old storage tank model saying they have heard that storage tank model have large stand by loss. With today’s DOE standard of insulation in water heaters stand-by loss is a thing of the past. We also here about running out of hot water as a reason to go tankless and this to may not be true as proper sizing can prevent this. The final question we get is can I just swap my old tank out for a tankless unit and that question has many answers.
For most people needing a new water heater a tankless model maybe the most expensive option where a new standard more efficient tank model will be less. Tankless models will require different venting and more often than not larger gas piping and your gas meter may also need to be up sized. We find that a good option to tankless is a high efficiency storage tank model. We have stainless steel models that are over 96% efficient, operate with lower gas flow requirements that rarely require pipe size increasing and have the same continuous hot water flow as tankless units and require less service. To learn more about high efficiency storage tank and tankless replacement water heaters call Sunworks for a free in home no-obligation assessment today.
