Our Work
Case Study: Hi Eff Boiler, Radiant Heating, Tankless and Solar Hot Water
Challenges
- Off grid solar powered home.
- Multiple rooms each with different heating requirements.
- 2 large soaking tubs that need plenty of hot water.
Our Recommendations
- Radiant floor heating.
- High efficiency LP gas boiler.
- High efficiency tankless water heating system.
- Solar hot water as a preheat system.
Our Installation Included
- 8 zone radiant floor heating system with lightweight gypsum overpour.
- 95% eff. LP gas Viessmann Vitocrossal 300 CU3A boiler with outdoor reset.
- Use a combination of air and slab sensing thermostats.
- Navien NPE-S 200,000 Btu tankless water heater with 80 gallon storage tank.
- Solar hot water heating system using 2- 4×8 Sunearth solar panels.
- Vaughn Corp custom built 120 gallon all-in-one drainback storage tank.
Final Results
While the home is still getting its final finishing work completed the radiant system is starting its second year of operation. The owner tells us that everyone loves the radiant floors and he can fill both 250 gallon tubs in under 20 minutes.
Case Study: Geothermal Heat Pump Replacement
Challenges
- Replace the failed water to water heat pump.
- Redesign mechanical room layout for easier service of radiant and water filtration systems.
- Correct the system design to eliminate short cycling and premature failure of the heat pump.
- Lower the system’s operating costs.
Our Recommendations
- Install a new geothermal heat pump with a storage tank.
- Redesign mechanical room grouping radiant and the water filtration equipment together.
- Implement proper HP/ radiant system design and control strategy.
Our Installation Included
- Removed the old heat pump and system piping.
- Relocated the water filter to the other side of the room and repiped the system.
- Installed a new Waterfurnace NSW 10 ton water to water heat pump.
- Installed a custom built Vaughn Corp. 100 gallon storage tank.
- Install potable water heat exchanger coil in storage tank to preheat gas water heater.
- Repiped the radiant system so it works more efficiently.
- Relocated zone circulators for easy service.
- Updated controls so the system will operate correctly.
Final Results
The new system installation was online for the beginning of this year’s heating season; it is too early to tell if the new design and heat pump will lower their operating costs. The owners have stated that the new heat pump runs less, is quieter than the old one and their home feels much warmer. They love the way the room is laid out and that they can now access the water filter equipment without having to climb around the old heat pump.

Case Study: Hybrid HP/Gas Dual Fuel System
Challenges
- Owners want air conditioning and are looking for ways to lower their heating costs.
- Newer home with 2 year old heating equipment.
- Work with the existing 80% efficient gas furnace.
- inspection found that the existing gas furnace (builder model) was grossly oversized.
- Correctly sized equipment needed.
Our Recommendations
- Work with the building contractor to have a properly sized furnace installed.
- Installing a heat pump instead of just an air conditioner.
Our Installation Included
- Helped the owner to get a properly sized furnace installed.
- Installed a new Fraser-Johnston 15 seer heat pump and indoor coil.
- Installed new wi-fi thermostat with remote room sensor.
- Set the hybrid dual fuel system up to operate either the heat pump or gas furnace for best efficiency.
Final Results
The system was installed June of 2019 just in time for the summer heat. They report that the AC works great. They reported their first year heating costs with the dual fuel system was $275.00 less compared to the first two years in their home with the gas furnace only. They figured the AC cost them $120.00.
Case Study: Gas Boiler/System Replacement
Challenges
- Replace old cast iron boiler with new hi eff. modulating/condensing boiler.
- Install radiant tubing for basement floor heating.
- Change system design from zone pumps to zone valves.
- Update controls and thermostats.
Our Recommendations
- Replace old cast iron boiler with new hi eff. modulating/condensing boiler.
- Install radiant tubing for basement floor heating.
- Change system design from zone pumps to zone valves.
- Update controls and thermostats.
Our Installation Included
- Removing the old boiler and system piping and controls from the basement.
- Rerouting all the zone supply and return lines to the new system location.
- Install new Dunkirk 95% eff. VLT boiler with new venting.
- Install Caleffi zone valves and control system and Grundfos VS pumps.
- Install Mr. Pex barrier tubing for the basement radiant floor.
Final Results
The owners are extremely happy with the end results. By removing the boiler system from the basement allowed it to be opened up and made room for their pool table, a setting area and gas fireplace. Tom Diamond with Cascadia Contracting came up with the idea to make a utility vault off the garage by digging out part of the crawl space. The new space is now home of the new heating system, plumbing and electrical panel.
