Radiant Floor Heatingtop of page

The benefits of radiant heat have been known for centuries-the Romans used it to heat their homes and baths.  Today we know that best way of warming a room is to heat the floor rather than to try to make the heat travel sideways from a fireplace, radiator or air register.

Living in a radiant heated home provides you with a level of comfort that no other heating method can match.  If you asked someone who lives in a radiant heated home what they like about it, they will tell you “it just feels right”.  That’s because, like the sun on your face, or the warm sand under your feet on a tropical beach, living with radiant heat is one of life’s simple pleasures.  By turning the floor of your home into a source of heat, you and your family will feel its warmth and comfort directly.  Radiant heat is:

  • Healthier, no hot air blowing around so your home is cleaner, healthier environment and everyone in it will breathe easier.
  • Invisible Comfort, no unsightly registers, baseboards or wall radiators, there’s nothing to see and no cold breezes.
  • Quieter, no fan or furnace combustion noises.
  • Lower heating costs, with radiant heat you are more comfortable at a lower thermostat setting saving you money.
  • Individual room control, radiant systems are easily zoned so each room can have a different comfort level.

Boilers and Hydronic Heating Systemstop of page

Just like gas furnace high efficiency boilers are gaining momentum.  If your home has or is going to have radiant floor heating then they maybe the right choice for you.

New high efficiency condensing boiler can be 15% to 20% more efficient than a 20 year old cast iron boiler so replacing that old unit with a new high efficiency one can save you money on your heating costs.  The question you should ask is will a high efficiency boiler work with my homes heating system.

The answer is probably yes if you have radiant floor heating and maybe if you have another form of hydronic heating such as hydronic baseboard or radiators.  High efficiency boilers require low return water temperatures to archive their best efficiency making them an ideal choice for radiant floor heating.  However if you have hydronic baseboard or radiators the return water temperature from this type of system will rarely be low enough for the condensing design of the high efficiency boiler to absorb any heat from it.  In this case you may be better off with a new standard efficiency boiler.

For smaller homes it may be possible to use a high efficiency tank model water heater or tankless water heater to provide both potable water heating and space heating using a heat exchanger.  Using just one system to both heat your potable water and your home can save your family money.

If you are unsure of what type of boiler to install in your home, our trained professionals can recommend high quality products and can help find the prefect unit to heat your home or business.

A new boiler replacement is an investment in your home.  It will increase the value of your home as well as reduce your monthly operating expenses, making your home more attractive and affordable to buyers.  Financing your investment has never been easier.   With a low monthly plan, a new boiler is affordable to any home owner.  With the money saved per month on your heating bills and utility company incentives, the new boiler will pay for itself in a short period of time.

If your boiler hasn’t been cleaned in a few years, than it is probably a good idea to have a seasonal service.  Also your boiler is only part of the system, the pumps, controls and other components all need to be in proper work order for the system to work at peak efficiency.

If you already have a boiler system installed in your home it is important to maintain it regularly.  Sunworks also provides Puget Sound residents with boiler system maintenance services.  Providing your boiler system with proper up keep can help you avoid future system malfunctions.

If your boiler system has stopped working or isn’t working the way it used to, our service technicians also provide boiler system repair services.  We can repair any brand or model that you have in your home.  We understand the importance of keeping your system working properly all year long, and we provide you with high quality service you won’t be able to find anywhere else.

Geothermal Heat Pumpstop of page

Geothermal heating and cooling is in step with the times and with the future.  “Green” technologies, which works with the environment instead of against it continue to gain momentum amid concerns over the skyrocketing cost of fossil fuels and energy conservation.  Geothermal heat pump can supply forced air heating and cooling with a central ducted supply system or hot or cool water for a radiant heating and cooling system.

A geothermal heat pump uses an abundant source of free, renewable energy to heat your home in the winter and cool it in the summer and it located right under your home.  The secret to a geothermal heat pump’s amazing efficiency is that, although it operates similarly to a standard heat pump, it exchanges heat with the ground instead of the outdoor air.  The temperature of the outdoor air can vary greatly from day to night and more than 80 degrees from the coldest winter night to the hottest summer day.  In contrast, the temperature just a few feet below the earth’s surface stays an average of 55 degrees year-round in the Pacific Northwest.

In the winter a geothermal heat pump can produce over five dollars of heat for each dollar spent on electricity to operate it.  During the summer a geothermal heat pump can be twice as efficient as the best air source system.

Geothermal systems offer,

  • Low operating costs
  • Enhanced Comfort
  • Reliability
  • Are Environmentally Friendly

Although setup costs for geothermal systems are higher than for traditional systems, users typically recoup the cost within the first 10 years of use with an estimated 25 year product lifetime.

The professional at Sunworks can successfully install a new geothermal heat pump in your home or business.  If you are looking for a more affordable way to keep your home comfortable all year long, a geothermal heat pump is the answer.  Using just one system to both heat and cool your home and provide up to 65% of your hot water heating can save your family money on electricity.

If you already have a geothermal heat pump installed in your home, it is important to maintain it regularly.  Sunworks also supplies local residents with geothermal heat pump maintenance services.  Providing your system with proper up keep can help you avoid future system malfunctions.

If your geothermal heat pump system has stopped working or isn’t working the way it used to, our professionals can help.  Sunworks also provides geothermal system repair services.  Our technicians can repair any brand or model that you might have in your home or business.  We understand the important of keeping your system working properly all year long, and we provide you with higher quality services that you won’t be able to find anywhere else.

Air to Water Heat Pumpstop of page

When it comes to keeping your home comfortable all year long, heat pump is a great option.  Heat pumps are a great choice because they work to provide both heating and cooling options. Whether it’s the hottest day of the summer or the coldest day of the winter, heat pumps work day and night to keep your family comfortable.Air to Water Heat Pumps is an innovative system that heats, produces domestic hot water and can cool home and offices. These heat pumps are an interesting alternative for homes with electric, gas or fuel oil boilers. They offer a renewable energy source, energy savings, and low CO2 emissions and provide heating, cooling and domestic hot water.

Air to water heat pumps work the same way as air to air heat pumps, by transferring heat from outside to inside in the winter and from inside to outside in the summer. The heated water produced can be used for radiant floor heating, panel radiators or a forced air heating and cooling system. These units are viable as a split system with an outdoor unit and an indoor hydro box or an all-in-one outdoor unit. They can be set up to provide heating only, heating and domestic hot water or heating, cooling and domestic hot water. They also can have a solar hot water connection. A great system for both new and existing homes.

Sunworks is a heat pump contractor that provides the South Sound with a number of heat pump services including heat pump installation, heat pump maintenance and heat pump repairs.  A heat pump is a special piece of equipment, available in both air-to-air and air-to-water, it works to pump hot air into the house in the winter to keep it warm, and it works to pump hot air out of your home in the summer to keep it cooler.  It also dehumidifies the indoor air for a cleaner air supply.

The most common application is an air-to-air heat pump with a central forced air duct system using room registers to circulate heated and cooled air around your home.   We also have mini-splits systems that work without central duct systems.  Referred to as ductless mini-split systems, they use smaller outdoor units and the indoor unit sits unobtrusively on the wall to control air flow.  These high-wall, under-ceiling and cassette systems are mounted in or near the ceiling.  This insures that they seamlessly blend in with any rooms’ décor while providing quiet temperature controlled comfort.  These systems come with remote controls, enabling users to easily control and change the buildings temperature.

Hi-Velocity Systemstop of page

High velocity systems use a specially designed air handler.  It moves a smaller amount of air at a higher speed though smaller supply ducting making it ideal for both new and existing homes and business.

The Hi-Velocity System is a complete home comfort system. Classified as an SDHV (Small Duct High Velocity System), the high pressure forced air delivery mini duct system can be designed to provide heating, cooling, filtration, ventilation, and dehumidification.   The Hi-Velocity System has been pre-engineered and works on the principle of pressure rather than air velocity.

The Hi-V system is quite different than a conventional furnace, one of the main differences being that the supply duct work is all “small diameter” or “mini duct”, which is much more adaptable and does not place the same strict limitations on architects and builders.  The system condition the air differently than conventional forced air systems.  Pressure is created in the smaller supply ducts and converted to velocity at the outlets utilizing the” Venturi Effect”, which eliminates dust build-up within the duct work.

With continuous air circulation from the constant fan, airborne dust and other allergens can be easily filtered out of the air.  With the use of a high pressure area to low pressure area, the system continuously mix the room air, creating even temperatures from floor to ceiling.  Equal air flow to all of the outlets results in unmatched air delivery, and a draft free environment that eliminates hot and cold spots normally associated with conventional systems.

Using an innovative fan coil and unique heating and cooling technologies, the Hi-Velocity System helps create a healthier and more enjoyable indoor living environment, while saving money on monthly utility bills.  The Energy Smart Variable Frequency Drive Motor will help save homeowners up to 50% on their monthly operating costs, and the system can be installed in 25% less time than a traditional heating system.

A network of smaller, flexible ducts operate under high pressure to continuously circulate air and ensure even heat distribution.  Boilers, dual purpose hot water heaters, heat pumps, and geothermal systems can all be used as heat sources with the system.  Also available with a slide in electric module for the system, that is easily installed without any external mounting or duct work required.

For cooling chillers, condensing units, geothermal systems, and heat pumps can all be used as cooling sources with this system.  The high pressure distribution network cools each level of your home evenly.  Use of a lower CFM across the cooling coils ensures a larger amount of humidity is removed from the air, for increased comfort.

At Sunworks we have been designing and installing Hi-V system for over 15 years in all types of homes, churches and business.   We find them an excellent choice for existing homes that need attic systems and idea for new home with radiant floor heating that want forced air cooling.

Gas Furnacestop of page

A forced air furnace is the most commonly used residential heating system used in the US, running most often on natural gas, but sometimes on propane gas, electricity or oil and deliver there heat through a duct system.

Electric furnaces are the least expensive furnace sto install but can cost more to operate.  One advance of electric furnaces is that they can be used with heat pump, with will make much cheaper to operate.   Most new homes being built in the Northwest will come with a gas furnace.  Gas furnaces come with a host of choices which can affect their price.

First is heat output, measured in British Thermal Units(Btu’s); an average new 2500 square foot home maybe will serviced by a 45,000 Btu’s unit where an older home may need 60,000 Btu’s. A heat loss and gain analyses will provide the correct sizing information.

Next consider efficiency.  Older model gas and propane furnaces were often rated at plus or minus 80% and were non-condensing with 20% of the heat output going up the vent.  New condensing models can have ratings as high as 97 percent.  These high-efficiency condensing furnaces use plastic vent pipe and only loose a small amount of their heat output out the vent.

Last, it’s also important to determine how effectively a gas furnace can heat your home, in a large part this can be determined by “staging” and blower options.  Odds are that, if your old furnace is more than 15 years old it is a single stage and single speed unit.  Meaning it always runs at full combustion power or output and has only one heating speed for the blower.  New furnaces can have 2 stage or modulating gas valves and variable speed blowers.

We have new single and 2 stage furnaces from 80% to 96% efficiency.  Two stage furnaces are capable of running at 60 to 65precent when first starting up to conserve fuel, and then ramping up to full output as needed. Some models are available with variable speed blowers.   Our super high 97% efficient furnace has a modulating gas valve and variable speed blower which can run anywhere from 33 to 100 percent power in 1 percent increments.  A new furnace with staging gas valve and variable speed blower will help increase comfort in your home and lower your energy bill.

We have been installing new gas furnaces for many years and we know that choosing a new gas furnace for your home is not easy.  There are many factors involved that can impact installation requirements and price.  We provide a free in-home consultation to determine the right size and will recommend options that can improve comfort and save you money on installation and heating costs.

Zoning (Zoned System)top of page

Many home owner have found that over the years their heating and cooling system does not work as well as they would like.   In the winter some rooms are too hot while others are too cold, while in the summer it may be the opposite.  Multi-level homes may be colder in the basement than the upper floors.  In the past most home heating and cooling system have been controlled by one thermostat.  Zoning is one of the best ways to control this.

A zoned system is the best way to control uneven heating and cooling in a home.   System zoning allows areas of the home to be heated or cooled to different levels.  If you want the basement warmer you can do that.  If the top floor is too warm during the summer a zoned system will allow you to cool it to a comfortable level with no effect on the rest of the home.  This ability to control different zones of the home not only improves comfort but can save you up to 20% on heating and cooling cost as will.

Installing a zoning system is easiest and best recommended when you are first having your home built but it is also possible to do in homes with existing systems.  Sunworks has been designing and installing zoned systems for over 20 years and can help you install a system in your home.  We carry many products and one is sure to work for you.

If you already have a zoned system installed in your home, it is important to maintain it regularly.    Sunworks also supplies zone control system maintenance services.  Providing your system with proper up keep can help you avoid future system malfunctions.

Water Heatingtop of page

Is your water heater on its last leg?  Not heating as well as it used too?  Does the last person into the shower get a cold one? Leak or puddles around the tank.  It may be time to replace it with a new high efficiency model.

New water heaters are far more efficient then ones that are 10 years old and tankless water heaters are a common replacement for many home owner.  At Sunworks we have been installing high efficiency water heaters for over 15 years and believe that there are many options when it comes time to replace yours that you should look at.  Your options will depend on location, size, both number of gallons and where it is located, number of people in your home and how much hot neater you use and need.

It is also a good idea to research the different options available before making your decision.   Many people ask us about tankless water heaters as a replacement for their old storage tank model saying they have heard that storage tank model have large stand by loss.  With today’s DOE standard of insulation in water heaters stand-by loss is a thing of the past.  We also here about running out of hot water as a reason to go tankless and this to may not be true as proper sizing can prevent this.  The final question we get is can I just swap my old tank out for a tankless unit and that question has many answers.

For most people needing a new water heater a tankless model maybe the most expensive option where a new standard more efficient tank model will be less.  Tankless models will require different venting and more often than not larger gas piping and your gas meter may also need to be up sized.  We find that a good option to tankless is a high efficiency storage tank model.  We have stainless steel models that are over 96% efficient,  operate with lower gas flow requirements that rarely require pipe size increasing and have the same continuous hot water flow as tankless units and require less service.

To learn more about high efficiency storage tank and tankless replacement water heaters call Sunworks for a free in home no-obligation assessment today.
